Hooray for new illustrations!!! This was done for my digital Illustration class I took last semester and took me FAR longer than it should have. It was my first time using Photoshop to paint and I didn't have a clue what I was doing. I'm a sucker for traditional materials, and I don't know how I feel about my work digitally yet, but digital is the way things are going so I need to know it!
This piece involved alot of research, mainly cuz it was an underwater painting and everything looks different under there. I learned that rocks are tricky to paint freehand and that custom brushes are an AMAZING help in this process.
It evolved from a line art sketch I did on the T on my way to school and I decided I liked it enough to use for a project. I chose to make her a freshwater mermaid cuz I felt that your traditional mermaid is getting a little cliche... I loved the idea of a "pondmaid" and this project has made me want to buy some goldfish.
I like the addition of the small wing/fins. The hint of gills on her neck and side is also nice. I would have expected the hair that covers her forehead (and thus not in the braid) to be more free flowing.
All in all, an excellent picture.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
This contest ends on Friday the 18th December 2009. If you want to enter, get your entries in quick! Here are all the entries so far. Also if you want to donate a prize, that would be fantastic too, just note me

if wishes were fishes, then i'd be the ocean
I really like this mermaid. Just to name a few things, how her spots continue past her tail, how her fins are curled. (The snail is also a bonus

I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am the wingged scourge that pecks at your nightmares! I am Darkwing Duck!
